The Subway Inn

Few brave souls venture into the Subway Inn on 60th and Lex, let alone into the bathroom. But I, like Virgil, will lead you into this nether region known only to a chosen few (those who just can't hold it in till they get home). Located past the dimly lit bar, in the back of the room are the men's and women's bathrooms. Each is a single occupancy room, large enough to cram in possibly 2 people. The women's room is sparsely decorated, with many an interesting message scrawled on the once white walls. The door to the stall barely closes, as does the door to the bathroom itself, but most of the regulars with their heads in their hands drinking bottles of bud at the bar will rarely notice. What the bathroom lacks in privacy, it also lacks in toilet paper and water pressure. But there is a bar of soap over the sink for cleanliness and a poorly lit mirror for those makeup touch ups that no one in the bar will ever notice.
  • Cleanliness - 3.5 flushes
  • Aroma - 3 flushes
  • Pros - soap, working facilities, interesting reading material on the walls
  • Cons - lack of paper products, doors that don't shut, puddles on the floor
  • Overall experience - 3.5 flushes

Mo's Caribbean

The bathrooms at Mo's Caribbean seems a bit out of place in a Caribbean themed bar/restaurant and would make more sense aesthetically at a venue like Southpaw. It was a very nicely decorated with bright tiles and a red sink area, but I could see it becoming a bit disorienting after downing one-to-many shots at the bar. There were three stalls in the ladies room, each with enough space to sit comfortably. Each had a trash can and ample amounts of toilet paper (so much someone decided to decorate the floor of one stall with it). On the wall above the sink area was white industrial soap and a paper towel dispenser.
  • Cleanliness - 3 flushes
  • Aroma - 3 flushes
  • Pros - large room with 3 stalls, 2 mirrors - one above sinks and the other above a convenient shelf along one wall
  • Cons - located downstairs - which can be difficult to maneuver while intoxicated, slightly alarming decor
  • Overall experience - 3 flushes

Iggy's - Upper East Side

To get to the bathrooms at Iggy's walk all the way past the enormous bar and hang a left. If you hit the karaoke stage and they force you to sing a song, you've gone to far. There are two bathrooms located in this area - choose the closer one since the farther one always seems to be a bit messier. Unlike most bathrooms that have been reviewed previously, which are located in the main room of a place, there is no feeling of a loss of privacy at Iggy's. The main room is usually not well lit and most people have their attention to the people doing karaoke on stage. Being that these bathrooms are located in a divey bar, they provide you with everything you need - 2 trash cans per bathroom and antibacterial soap. On this occasion, there were paper towels and toilet paper, but very often they run out, so you may want to steal a few napkins from the bar, just in case.
  • Cleanliness - a pleasantly surprising 3 flushes on this visit, but could be anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 flushes
  • Aroma - stale beer and urine: 4 flushes
  • Pros - a small ledge to carefully balance your bag on, antibacterial soap, mirror above the sink
  • Cons - occasional lack of paper products, sticky floors
  • Overall experience - 4 flushes

Bar Coastal

Located on the Upper East side is the bathroom at Bar Coastal. While the decor of the bar itself is UES trailer-chic, the bathroom is quite bland with only a solitary patriotic touch of a "United We Stand" poster on the wall. Two toilets in the women's bathroom, a toilet and a urinal in the men's. Each bathroom has one sink and a hand-dryer. Having paper towels placed on the sink would have been a nice touch, but was overlooked. Bar Coastal does make an interesting choice of no mirrors above the sink. Perhaps since the rooms are quite small they figured that by eliminating the mirror you will also eliminate a gathering crowd.

  • Cleanliness - 3 flushes
  • Aroma - 2 flushes (mainly due to the women's bathroom being next door to the kitchen. The odor of the chicken wings is heavenly)
  • Overall experience - 3.5 flushes
  • Amenities - hand-dryer

Welcome to New York Toilets

Greetings to all. We at New York Toilets are committed to bringing you the most comprehensive review of toilets throughout the city. Because, we all have to go... sometimes, and we should be aware of what is in store for us. To introduce ourselves and this new resource, we thought we'd show you where we are coming from. This toilet belongs to us, for at least the next 2 months to a year. It is located somewhere on the Upper East Side in a pre-war building. This toilet, more or less, functions properly. Good suction, not too noisy. Although its tank does refill for no apparent reason once someone sits down on it. The problem with this toilet is the seat, which was purchased in the clearance section of Bed, Bath and Beyond. It never fit properly and now is broken, so sit on it with care or else you may slide off. The nautical theme is invoked by fake wood veneer.

All toilets will be rated in flushes - 1 being the best and 5 being the worst.
  • Cleanliness - 3 flushes
  • Aroma - 2 flushes
  • Overall experience - 2.5 flushes
  • Amenities - shower near by, sink with many guests' towels hanging close to it, 2 out of 4 lights over the sink still working
  • Pros - close to home
  • Cons - too close to the bedroom, never toilet paper on the roll
